When you’re shopping around for your metal building packages, pay attention to the type of metal you’re getting quoted. There are lots of nuances here, but let me break it down for you in simple terms. The type of metal panel you use, in general, really depends on where you live and your weather conditions and in some cases, the pitch of the roof design. First, let’s talk metal gauge. A 29 gauge metal panel is thinner than say a 26 gauge metal panel. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the metal panel. Pay attention to tensile strength…the hardiness of the panel. This is especially important if you have a lot of hail your area. Here, you’re looking for a higher number…100,000 psi versus 60,000 psi. Harder steel. Panel design… this plays another an important part of your decision making process. On your roof system— standing seam or PBR panel, for example. If you’re adding solar panels, want concealed fasteners or looking for a lifetime roof, we recommend a standing seam roof. Know that a standing seam roof costs more but it may be well worth it to have less potential problems down the road. Finally, what kind of color coating do you have on your metal panel. There’s lots to choose from but in general we prefer a Kynar metal coating on your panel for its durability and for color retention. There are other things to keep in mind like your fastener system, but I’m not looking to get into too much detail… or make you a metal expert——Just to give you some good information when you’re looking at material quotes. When you’re getting your quote, all of these features can differ greatly depending on the manufacturer and impact the price you pay.
